What is First Response Training?

One of the most important moments for a child who has been abused is when they make an initial disclosure. Your FIRST response to an initial outcry of maltreatment is the single most important step to supporting a child and making a report. FIRST Response equips you with the necessary skills to respond in a trauma-competent manner during the initial outcry.

Core Features of Your FIRST Response:

FIRST Response teaches three critical components:

• How to recognize signs and symptoms of abuse and maltreatment.

• How to listen and respond to a child's needs.

• How to effectively and accurately report any form of maltreatment to authorities.

Why does it apply to me?

Child sexual abuse is likely the most prevalent health problem children face, with the most serious array of consequences. In fact, 1 in 10 children will experience sexual abuse before their 18th birthday.

This means that whether you work with youth, are a parent, or are simply a member of a community, it is highly likely that someone you know or care for has experienced, or is currently experiencing, child sexual abuse.

Your FIRST Response to Child Maltreatment training teaches participants how to listen to children who have experienced maltreatment and gather the correct information needed in a way that puts the child’s needs FIRST.

If you work with or care for children in any capacity, you could be in a position to be the person to whom they choose to disclose abuse. FIRST Response Training will equip you to listen to children who have experienced maltreatment and gather the correct information needed in a way that puts the CHILD’S needs FIRST!
