National Bullying Prevention Month: Connecting Bullying and Mental Health
October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the lasting impact of bullying on youth. Bullying doesn’t just affect kids in the moment; it can severely impact a child’s mental health, leading to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. In some cases, it can even contribute to more serious concerns like suicidal thoughts. As an organization dedicated to preventing youth abuse and suicide, we are committed to addressing the critical link between bullying and youth mental health.
At the Indiana Center for Prevention of Youth Abuse and Suicide, we understand that bullying is more than a behavioral issue—it's a mental health concern. Our Signs of Suicide (SOS) program directly addresses these challenges by educating youth on how to recognize the signs of depression in themselves and others. Through open communication and help-seeking behaviors, students are empowered to support their peers and connect with trusted adults when they notice warning signs. This simple yet powerful education can make all the difference in preventing a crisis.
In addition to SOS, our QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Gatekeeper Training equips adults with the tools to intervene when someone may be considering suicide. These programs work hand-in-hand to provide both youth and adults with practical, life-saving skills, helping to address the immediate and long-term effects of bullying.
By focusing on prevention and response, we empower our community to create safer, more supportive environments where bullying is recognized and addressed, and mental health is prioritized. This October, let’s stand together to make a difference in the lives of children and teens who may be struggling.
